C-Section, Hysterectomy and Abdominal Scar Immersion Therapy

Scar immersion / scar tissue massage is for women who have experienced a c-section birth, a hysterectomy or abdominal surgery.

Do you...

  • experience pulling or tightness on your scar during normal activity?

  • experience pulling or tightness after an increase in load?

  • feel you are being physically restricted by your scar?

  • suffer with lower back pain?

  • experience numbness on or around the scar?

  • want to improve the appearance of your tummy and scar?

  • want to improve your core functioning?

  • feel that your abdomen doesn't feel quite right?

As a Burrell Education Certified Scar Immersion Coach** unlike some other scar treatments, this therapy does not focus solely on the scar but on the whole woman and the wider impact of the scar tissue.

Scar immersion encourages mobility between the layers of skin and the muscle and fascia.  This type of treatment can help to improve mobility while loosening and releasing tight scar tissue. This often results in an improved range of motion; can help restore core function and a reduction in discomfort. This type of massage suits those who have recently given birth and are in the 4th trimester as long as the scar has healed, as well as those whose surgery was long ago – the benefits of scar immersion are not time sensitive and can be experienced regardless of how old the scar is.

I thought it might be helpful to give you an idea of what happens in a scar immersion treatment as this is not something that everyone is familiar with. After booking an appointment,  you will be asked to complete a thorough screening assessment form.  This is to enable me to understand you and your scar history and what you might be hoping to get from the session/s. The first appointment is 80 minutes during which we will discuss the written information you provided as well assessing your breathing patterns, posture and movement. I will also feel your abdomen to assess for areas of tension as well as assessing all scars on the abdomen. How the appointment progresses from here will depend entirely on the assessment and what you are hoping to achieve. I have a variety of massage techniques that I can use and may ask for your interaction in the treatment. It is likely that you will be given a small amount of homework to help maintain the benefits of the session.

Scar immersion treatments are very personalised and therefore is it difficult to say without seeing a scar and laying hands on a client how many sessions will be needed. That said, most women benefit from at least 2-3 sessions.

** Please note that I am unable to work over mesh.  If you would like scar immersion treatment but have had mesh, please contact me to discuss this before booking an appointment.

I have found that it is helpful to have a telephone discussion with clients interested in scar immersion therapy before booking appointments.  If  you would like to do this, please email me to arrange a free initial chat to discuss whether this therapy is appropriate for you.
